Putting Lessons at The Jonathan Yarwood Golf Academy
Over the next 6 weeks we will be conducting putting lesson using the exciting SAM Putting system.
SAM PuttLab is “the ultimate putting training system”. Using state of the art Ultrasound it is able to give you incredibly accurate measurements which can help greatly with both training and analysis. By tracking 28 of the most important factors in your putting stroke such as rotation, acceleration, impact and swing duration, it is able to give you feedback on the smallest detail of your stroke within seconds; and all in an easy to understand graphical report.
In using Ultrasound technology and certain mathematic algorithms SAM Puttlab is far more accurate than other systems on the market. And would highlight key areas on how to improve your game such as sweetspots or club face angle, to allow for a more effective training session.
The lesson will also include a video of the current putting action and of the changes that are made. You will also receive an email of your lesson with a before and after of your stroke.
This is normally priced at £99 per hour, this will be available to the first 10 people at the special rate of £75. Please contact Matt Woods on mw@golfjy.com for a booking or more details.

Ladies Coffee Morning
Our Ladies Section hosted a very successful Coffee Morning on the 18th May when 55 ladies from 11 local clubs participated in the event. All the ladies who played commented upon how good the course was and what an enjoyable day they all had.
The DG lady members provided a huge array of home made cakes and biscuits, which were consumed very quickly both by the lady players and gentlemen visiting the course.
Apart from the golf, £510 was raised for the Captain’s Charities from the sale of raffle tickets, donations for homemade cakes and commission from the sale of ladies golf attire which were sold by Renee’s Golf Wear.
To view photographs from the day please visit our photo gallery.
There are still places left in the DG Ladies Open which is taking place on the 22nd June 2011. Please visit the Donnington Grove Main web site to Download an Entry form.

The Trilby Tour at Donnington Grove Country Club
Donnington Grove held three well supported qualifiers for William Hunt Trilby Tour Championship of Berkshire during late April and early May and is now looking forward to hosting the Championship on Thursday, 12th May. It promises to be a great day with over 100 competitors vying for the Berkshire title and qualification to the national Championship in front of Sky TV cameras.
The three qualifying rounds were played in bright sunshine but very windy conditions. Despite this the winning scores, played off ¾ handicaps were creditable. Aran Hayashi, a 4 handicapper from Burhill GC, won the first qualifier with 34 points; Paul Morrisey, a 6 handicapper from Wisley GC, won the second on count-back with 36 points; and Jonathan Laycock, a 10 handicapper from Ealing GC, won the last qualifier with 37 points.
Congratulations to all three and we wish them luck in the Championship on Thursday, 12th May.
The qualifiers for the Championship will not only have to cope with the pressure of Sky’s TV cameras but they will get a taste of what the professionals experience – caddies, rules officials, no measuring devices, a “nearest the pin” shoot out for ties and a 3-hole play-off for the top four scores to decide the William Hunt Trilby Tour Berkshire Champion 2011.
Spectators are welcome at no charge so why not come along and watch some really competitive golf and experience the picturesque environment at Donnington Grove Country Club.

Golf Lesson 4: Putting
I love being on the driving range. Not only is it good practice but it is also quite relaxing to just go out there and whack 60 balls as far as I can. Sadly, this week’s lesson was going to be spent on the green instead of on the range. I was a little disappointed at first but Matt explained that a large proportion of your shots are taken on the green so you should spend an equal proportion of your practice time putting. That’s logic you can’t argue with and besides it was probably time for me to learn how to putt so that I can actually play a full hole.
We went to the practice green and Matt showed me how to get a feel for the distant and slope of the green by getting me to roll a few balls towards the hole. This routine helped me figure out the amount of power needed to get the ball where I wanted it to go. We did this from different angles so I could see the impact of having to putt on different gradients and how this affects the amount of power needed. It was a very simple exercise but it was really useful.
Then we got onto the putting itself. Just as when I learnt how to tee off, I found there was more to it than meets the eye. Putting is more of a pendulum motion which means your distance from the ball is very important. Too far or too close to the ball and you’ll send it the wrong way. Once your distance is set, draw your elbows into your rib cage so your arms and your torso are connected allowing for that smooth pendulum motion. All you have to do now is remember how much power is required to make the distance, and then just take a nice smooth stroke. Simple, right? Let’s just say practice makes perfect.

The Trilby Tour & Sky Sports TV Come to Donnington Grove
Donnington Grove Country Club, home of one of Berkshire’s finest golf courses, has been chosen to host a 2011 Trilby Tour Qualifier. On 12th May 2011, Donnington Grove’s excellent golf course, historic hotel and exceptional practice facilities will be host to one of the biggest and most popular amateur events in the golfing calendar, all broadcast on Sky Sports. This is not only a fantastic opportunity for the club but also a brilliant opportunity for national and local companies to become involved in one of golf’s most exciting tournaments.
The Trilby Tour was created in 2007 by William Hunt and has since become, probably, the most prestigious amateur golf tournament in the UK. Amateurs equipped with trilby hats, golf shirts, trousers & belts compete under professional conditions with compulsory caddies in uniform and caps – like The Masters at Augusta – for a chance to win the top “Winner Takes All” prize. Each round of the multi-event tour is broadcast as part of a summer series on Sky Sports.
Donnington Groves’ General Manager, Christopher Strong said “The William Hunt Trilby Tour is an exciting event that has grown every year. We are thrilled to be hosting one of the most important tours in amateur golf and are really looking forward to the big day. This is a chance for amateurs to experience the pressures of a professional golfer in a televised event. ”
To involve the local golfing community Donnington Grove will be hosting pre-qualifying events on Tuesday, 26th and Thursday, 28th April. The winners will earn a place in the Donnington Grove qualifier, which will be broadcast on Sky Sports.
Businesses also have the opportunity to become involved too by sponsoring the event and exposing their company and brand to the millions of viewers across the country. All corporate sponsors will be entered into the Corporate Day where the winner will be given a place in the Regional Final event on Thursday, 12th May 2011.
