Competitions and Handicap Secretary Biography
John Tonner
Competitions Secretary

My
grandfather gave me a cut down three iron, some 49 years ago as we walked along
the beach on the east coast of Kintyre.
He showed me how to hold the club with a Vardon type grip then laughed
when I spent the next few hours trying to hit the ball off the sand. I loved the game from those very early
stages and still do now.
I have been
very fortunate and have played golf all around the world to varying standards,
the highlight of my playing time so far was representing the RAF against the
Army and Navy in the 80s, playing with Colin Montomorie in the 2003 Wales Open
Pro-Am and Lee Westwood in the 2004 Wales Open Pro-Am.
Probably
my fondest experience was caddying for our own Mike Williams during the 2008
Senior British Open where we shared breakfasts with my golfing heroes of Gary
Player, Tom Watson, Bob Charles and Bernhard Langer. Mike’s first round was magnificent and we
were “for the briefest of moments” on top of the leader board.
I
hope that I can bring my experiences to the benefit of our club and enhance the
good work previous Competition Secretaries have delivered.
